June 2011 Services

JUNE 5 “THE PASSION TO BE”

Reverend Michael Nelson reflects, “‘Can I break through the film of the abstract?’ The tension of Adrienne Rich’s question helps us to examine what moves us from illusion to the real world. Unitarian Universalism traverses that wavering line. Our progressive faith asks us to be as fully engaged in the wondrous world we inhabit.” Contact Michael at 537-2349 or minister@uufm.net.

JUNE 12 “A SEARCH FOR JUSTICE”

A panel, headed by Jonathan Mertz, chair of the Flint Hills Human Rights Project, will review the recent repeal of the LGBT human rights ordinance by the Manhattan City Commission and look forward to how we can correct this human rights violation. When any segment of our population is denied civil rights everyone’s lives are lessened. Contact/convener is Michael Nelson at 537-2349 or minister@uufm.net.

JUNE 19 “FREE RANGE KIDS AND THE ETHICS OF RISK”

Scott Tanona will discuss the Free Range Kids movement, an approach to parenting that harkens to an earlier era when kids were allowed greater freedom to discover their world on their own terms and without constant adult supervision. This movement coincides with a growing understanding of the many ways in which our intuitive judgments of dangers are out of sync with objective analyses of those risks. Ethical decision making, in parenting as in other areas of life, requires attention to one’s own psychology and the ways gut reactions may not reflect one’s true values. Sometimes what seems risky is the least risky path to what we really want in life. Contact Scott at 537-6208 orstanona@sbcglobal.net.

 JUNE 26 “PERSONAL RELIGIOUS JOURNEYS”

Fellowship members Julio Torres and Laura Lott share the paths that lead them to this point in their personal spiritual journeys. Contact/convener is Dave Lambert at 587-8750 ordavid.k.lambert@gmail.com.
