Audio Archive, Oct. 7, 2012 – Water, the Gift of Life

Reverend Michael Nelson reflects, “Without a source of water, life cannot thrive. For those of you who have city water or have a rural water line, taking a warm shower is not something you probably think much about. Even though the inferno summer has passed, the drought lingers.”

Additional resources provided by Christopher Renner:

The interview I conducted with Charles Rice on global climate change can be found at:

http://communitybridge.blogspot.com/2011/07/global-warming-what-every-person-needs.html

Program summary: “Charles Rice, distinguished K-State Professor of Soil Microbiology and President, Soil Science Society of America, joins us for a discussion of what science knows about global climate change – and it isn’t what the corporate media is saying! Contrary to what the US media and the New York Times in particular has been saying, there is not disagreement in the scientific community on this topic. Global warming is happening and it could drastically alter life as we know it. Rice also gives a report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting preparing for the 5th Assessment Report which took place this past week in South Korea.”

There are additional links to further reading at this site as well.

Then in July 2011 I interviewed, Chris Cardinal, Legislative Director for the Kansas Sierra Club, for a discussion of water policy for the state of Kansas as well as discussing some strategies people who are concerned about the environment can employ given the actual political reality.

New Internationalist resources:

The New Internationalist was founded by Oxfam but is now an independent cooperative of journalist who peruse topics and issues often ignored by the mainstream press.  I find the magazine to be the most valuable resource when it comes to justice and peace that enters my home each month.

The April 2012 issue is dedicated to Global Climate Change and can be read at:

http://www.newint.org/issues/2012/04/01/

The November 2011 issue was entitled “Banking on Hunger” – Food has become a hot asset as markets pour money into agricultural commodities, pushing up the price of food and forcing millions into poverty. We investigate how investments in staple foods like maize and wheat have caused hunger, profile the financiers buying up African savannah, and call for an urgent clampdown on speculation.

They did an issue just on toilets in 2008 entitled “We need to think about toilets” – issue number 414.  Sadly it is no longer available for free but can be purchased at: http://www.newint.org/magazine/past-issues/

Back in 2003, the did an issue just on the topic of water, “Water: Every drop counts.” It can be accessed at:

http://www.newint.org/issues/2003/03/01/      They list the titles of the articles, but no longer give summaries.  They are all worth reading.

Another excellent resource on water is the National Geographic from October 2012, it is available at:
