Date/Time Event
12:00 am -11:59 pm Wear Orange Day   ,
Manhattan Area Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America sponsors Wear Orange Day, pandemic edition.

From wearorange.org“Orange Is the color that Hadlya Pendleton’s friends wore in her honor when she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of fifteen, just one week after she performed at President Obama’s 2nd inaugural parade in 2013.   After her death, they asked us to stand up, speak out, and Wear Orange to raise awareness about gun violence.”  Several national organizations involved in gun-violence reduction adopted the color and Hadiya’s memory as they commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day on the first Friday in June to reduce the senseless slaughter that is America’s gun-violence crisis.

Wear Orange during the pandemic. Instead of gathering on the first Friday in June, this year, to honor Hadiya and to demand gun-sense legislation to make us safer, we will place orange-painted rocks around town to raise awareness of the issue of gun violence in our community. We will also have a private Facebook event to share information about gun violence and organizations in our community who assist those at risk or affected by gun violence.  This will last for two weeks, from May 23 to June 6.

We would love for community members to help us spread the word about this important issue by painting rocks orange and putting them in highly visible places, such as near your curb or on walking trails around town.  On the rocks, you can include messages such as “end gun violence,” include the name of a loved one affected by gun violence, or even wearorange.org.  You can also join our Facebook event. You have two options for this:
  1. Go to wearorange.org, find the Manhattan event, and RSVP.  You will receive information regarding the Facebook event and how you can get involved.
  2. Email Andrea at andisue@hotmail.com in order to be added to the Facebook event.

Rev Jonalu Johnstone reflects, “As Christians celebrate Pentecost (the receiving of the Holy Spirit) and Jews Shavu’ot (the receiving of the Law at Mount Sinai), we’ll look at what it means to approach a spiritual threshold, a time when the wind of the spirit moves through a people.  Both groups were wandering in wildernesses, literally or metaphorically.  How did Spirit shape them?  “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.  So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”  Our convener is Judy Nickelson at judynickelson@gmail.com.
