What’s Happening in July 2023

SUMMER FUN!

We are doing things a little different in July. Scratch that.
We are doing things COMPLETELY DIFFERENT in July. We are taking a break from regular Sunday morning services and kids and adults are joining together to fill the month with ….

JULY 2 – BBQ & FUN at Tuttle
4:00 pm – 8:00 pm (Shelter #2)
We’ll plan to meet for a picnic at Tuttle Creek Outlet Park, Shelter #2, (4401 Pfeil Creek Circle) from about 4:00 until 8:00 pm. This is a beautiful shelter with a playground for kids, volleyball net, grills, picnic tables, and the outlet pond a short drive away for boating (there will be a canoe and rowboat, or bring your own).
We are providing water, iced tea, hotdogs, buns, and chips but bring whatever else you would like to barbeque or share.

Need a ride? We got you! Contact Sandy (dre@uufm.net) or Dan (swenson.home@gmail.com) for rides or questions.

(If it is raining, we’ll meet at the Fellowship.)

JULY 9 – ROAD TRIP: SHARED WORSHIP at First Congregational
10:45 am – noon
Our second of three services in the Summer Worship Exchange with First Congregational Church and Manhattan Mennonite. Pastor Isa is leading the service at First Congregational. CLICK HERE to read about the service.   And CLICK HERE to read a family-friendly “What to expect” document.

JULY 15 & 16 – THIS IS WHO WE ARE: COLLECTIVE ART PROJECT at UUFM
Over the weekend, participants will have the opportunity to create a mask that represents them at this moment in time, as the unique individual each of us are. These masks will then be displayed together as an installation, celebrating the interdependent web and emergent properties of our beloved community. When the installation is taken down (date TBD), you can take your mask home with you.
Saturday, July 15 – This Is Who We Are Part I: masks
4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (drop in for an hour or two, plus snacks!)
Sunday, July 16 –  This Is Who We Are Part II: paint and decorate
10:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. open studio

JULY 23 – MOVIE NIGHT & POTLUCK at UUFM
4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
4:00 Screenings begin (titles subject to change.)
                “Lucky” (rated R)
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (rated PG)
6:00 Discussion and potluck/brown bag
“Popcorn Theology” is a UU-designed curriculum using film as a learning opportunity to examine issues of theological and ethical importance to our world. Popcorn will be provided but you can bring your own Jujubes. We’ll follow the films with a potluck (or bring your own brown bag dinner) and discuss the film during the shared meal.

JULY 29 (Saturday) – ROAD TRIP: BROWN v. BOARD OF EDUCATION in Topeka
9:15 am – ?? (meet at UUFM to carpool)
John Brown’s involvement in Bleeding Kansas set the spark that ignited the Civil War that freed millions of enslaved human beings. Brown v. Board of Education fired the opening shots in the Civil Rights Movement determined to end the second-class citizenship assigned to African Americans.
We will leave the Fellowship parking lot at 9:15 on Saturday, July 29, and drive to Brown v. Board (1515 SE Monroe Street, Topeka, 66612). We have a ranger-guided tour scheduled for 10:30.
If you bring a sack lunch, we can have a pleasant meal after the tour at one of the shaded picnic tables on site.
On your own you could continue to the Topeka Zoo (ride the train!) or visit the Capitol (see John Curry’s mural of John Brown in the rotunda of the Kansas State Capitol and then climb the stairs all the way to the top to look out over Topeka!).
For questions or information, contact Dan (swenson.home@gmail.com) or Sandy (dre@uufm.net).

JULY 30 – NOTHING!
Stay home. Sleep in. Ask a friend to breakfast. Meet others at the park. Read a book. Paint a picture. Dig a hole. Mow the grass before it gets too hot. Meet up with others for lunch at Meadowlark. Jump through a sprinkler with the neighbors. Go to the movies. Walk the dog.  Take a nap. Ask a friend to Dinner. Call a relative. Play hopscotch. Enjoy the day.
