One of the real miracles of Christmas is that the man Jesus has survived what centuries have done to his memory, and that the human spirit of the man is alive among us, undimmed by ages of distortion and denial. Jesus believed in the Hebrew faith and his life led him to stress unforgettably the humane insights of that faith; yes, a man whose intense, generous humanity has survived the human creeds, crusades, violence, and insipid sentimentalities that have been created in his name. Tom Phillips convenes this morning’s service.
