Free speech is a cornerstone of democracy when it serves human freedom. But when coopted by individuals and groups bent on destruction and exclusion, it becomes an unjust weapon. Similarly, safe spaces are essential for human flourishing. But when weaponized to police emotional expression, they become oppressive and exclusive. We avoid these extremes when we remember the humanity in each and every person we interact with and insist that they do the same for us.
