Water Communion: The River Takes Us Where We Need to Go (video available)

We frame our Annual Water Communion with the wisdom of early church father Bishop Ambrose who counsels us to “Imitate the fish.” From the third century to us today, he says: “On the sea the storm rages, the winds scream out, but the fish swims; he is not swallowed up because he is used to swimming.” We may not be used to swimming through the waves of this historical moment, but we are made of water. We belong to the river, so let’s learn together how to let her take us where we need to go. For the Water Communion, please bring a glug of water representing the waterways that sustained you over the summer. As we pour our waters together, we mark the new church year and our intention to re-enter the flow of congregational life. You are also invited to bring an empty cup to represent the thirst being experienced by you or others at this time, be it physical or metaphorical. We pray that we may find ways, together, to fill the world’s cups as well as our own.
