Scholartivists (video available)

The Unitarian Universalist community of communities is composed of scholars, artists, and activists, and sometimes these identities are all rolled into a single person. We are a “scholartivist” tradition, to use a term coined by the late religious educator Ibrahim Abdurrahman Farajajé. A critical mass of UUFM members are students, staff, and teachers in formal educational environments. We are fierce defenders of public education, access to higher education, and the intellectual freedom of university scholars. But we also know that education can happen anywhere, and that beauty and truth are often found at the intersection of creativity and resistance. This Sunday, Pastor Isabel reflects on the intertwining intellectual, creative, and activist roots of our faith. They also share their plans to deepen a scholartivist practice during their upcoming sabbatical.
