Biophilia and Our Connection to the Living World through Kansan Insects

Rob will be highlighting E.O. Wilson’s classic book Biophilia, whose central thesis is that Humans have an innate, biologically rooted affinity for life and life-like processes—a trait Wilson dubs “biophilia,” meaning “love of life.” This innate affinity for other living organisms fills us with joy and gives our lives meaning, and it’s a moral argument for conservation in this time of global insect decline and the sixth mass extinction event we are all presently living through. Rob will walk us through E.O. Wilson’s argument that we are “biophilic”, as well as how this book has shaped design and conservation in the ensuing years, and how we can “rekindle” our own biophilia through the insects we encounter in Kansas.
