The Myth of Autonomy and the Truth of Interdependence (video available)

Sylvia and Dick Beeman explore how the concept of “autonomy of the citizenry” was introduced into Western thought as an alternative to the prevailing mode of institutional control by religious and monarchical authority; how the concept of autonomy morphed into its contemporary meaning of individual self-sufficiency; how it contrasts with Indigenous American ideas about relationship and responsibility to relatives and to the land. The program includes original poetry by Laura Lott.
