Can Atheists Pray?

Though it is said “there are no atheists in foxholes,” many at UUFM have endured hardships without coming to believe in God. We often cringe when theists (well-meaning and not) respond to our heartaches with a promise to “pray for us” because we don’t believe in magical shortcuts to healing and transformation. But we nonetheless hold hopes and dreams for ourselves, our loved ones, and the world. And we have faith in each other, in the Earth, in love. This Sunday we reflect on spiritual practices – including prayer – that help us cultivate compassion for ourselves or others, whether or not we believe in God.
