Sunday (June 22) was a blast! There were 5 new faces and we all “traveled” to Japan with David Mckee. He showed us a slide show of all the places in Japan he had been: Beautiful, ancient shrines, Bath houses, even hot springs where natural Jacuzzi tubs are formed…that monkeys sit in to stay warm in the winter (apparently there are web cams where you can watch the monkeys hangout)! This was pretty popular with the kiddos and sparked quite a few questions.
From there Melissa and David both (as did Kim and I) watched as the kids tried sushi. Many tried the tuna kind and almost all tried wasabi, and pickled ginger. William’s face was kinda priceless with the ginger, but I had warn about wasabi since pickles are “too hot”.
Origami was next on our tourist agenda. It is pretty amazing to see a giant stack of paper, and 18 kids turn into paper cups (that hold water), balloons ( that hold air), cranes and doves! The middle part between paper and finished product was hectic but David and Melissa both pushed through with oodles of patience showing and reshowing just where to fold and unfold paper to create. It was such a big hit every child from oldest to 4 and 5 concentrated, listened and folded little creases with full faith that it would result in art. Kim worked hard as well, where as I bumbled around at this part, helping by directing children to the proper person for their particular project.
All said and done we had an amazing Sunday “traveling” to Japan. Everyone came away knowing more, interested in either the hot springs monkeys or paper animals. Thank you so much David and Melissa!! We will miss your presence at our fellowship, who knows, maybe a special appearance next summer? Japan? |
