Endings and Beginnings
Summer is lovely for many of us who get a break from regular school-year obligations. The days are longer and there are more opportunities to do things for pure fun. We’re as far away as possible from the “winter blues.” And yet even in the summer, people may be feeling isolated. Perhaps you rely on the school year for your rhythm of social activities. Maybe the outdoors makes you itch. Meanwhile, our culture is inherently isolating. So I just want to remind you: you’re not alone. If you’re feeling cranky, lonely, overheated, COVID-positive, fill-in-the-blank, you’re not alone. There are people who care about you and there are ways to connect. And if you need a break from peopling, that’s cool too. We’re here when you need us.
This summer, I’m taking a few weeks of study leave and not offering as much leadership to the various activities going on around the Fellowship. Some of your favorite people may be scarce. You may be scarce. What’s it like when the pattern is disrupted? Are you able to keep your bearings? Do you enjoy the break? What new hopes and intentions are taking shape in the calm? As a kid, my excitement about the beginning of summer was actually surpassed by my excitement about the return of the school year. Finally–some structure. But of course, the structure would be different this time around.
Last month, many of us were drawn into ferocious activity to oppose the constitutional amendment threatening abortion rights. Because a vast majority of Unitarian Universalists oppose legal restrictions on abortion, the ballot initiative was a galvanizing experience. At first I resisted because I really wanted to rest this summer! But it was actually rejuvenating to work with you all on the campaign. As of this writing, we’re not sure of the outcome of the August 2nd vote. When you read this, you may be celebrating or grieving, but no matter what, others in the Fellowship and across Manhat-tan and the state of Kansas will be doing the same. And no matter the outcome, we will have been changed by the experience of the fight.
We come back together later this month with renewed commitment to our shared values. If you need a few more weeks of rest, take them. But know that we’re here, cleaning off our slates for new learnings. The fall will bring familiar traditions: Trunk-or-treat, Thanksgiving, Holiday Craft and Bake Craft Sale. But we’ll also try some new things, starting with a Blessing of the Backpacks this month, August 21. What blessing do you need to begin the transition into fall? What final celebrations do you need before letting go of summer?
See you soon,
