What’s Happening in RE February 2023

WELCOME TO  LOVE!

In the month of February we explore the challenges and paths of LOVE. Some of the ways we’ll explore are:
Love for Self
Love for Family and Friends; Valentine’s
Love for Community
What Do You Really LOVE? Show-n-Tell.

Come see what’s in the mystery box each week as we gather the light of truth, the warmth of love, and the energy of action into our hearts.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR – OUR WHOLE LIVES (OWL) – IN SESSION!

Each Sunday in February some of our younger elementary students are enrolled in Our Whole Lives (OWL) classes. Our trained facilitators are Jen Campbell and Christopher Renner.

Developed together by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ, Our Whole Lives is a series of sexual education curricula where children learn in an accurate and age-appropriate way about human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. The OWL program acknowledges that parents are the primary educators and facilitators are trained to help with the education process. Class runs from 10:30 until 12:15 and they meet in the Jupiter Room.

Next winter we anticipate a class for 5th and 6th grade students. If you have questions or are interested in the OWL program please contact Sandy at DRE@uufm.net.

Here’s a poem from a graduate of the teen OWL program (but I’m confident that OWL graduates of each curriculum level agree with the sentiment).

Proud OWL
by Ted Scheu, CVUUS – Middlebury, VT / April 2019

At times I felt awkward,
and other times smart.
Most times I felt comfortable
deep in my heart.

I knew I was learning
some interesting stuff.
Sometimes it felt easy,
and other times tough.

We listened and shared our ideas,
and debated.
Without friends to help me,
I might not have made it.

Our time every Sunday
seemed, sometimes, too long.
But now, looking back, it seems short.
And I’m strong.

Strong with the knowledge
of how bodies change.
And how I can be me,
without feeling strange.

I know who to turn to
if questions arise,
to handle the pressures
and, sometimes, the lies.

I’ll stand up for me,
and for friends all around me.
I’m glad I found OWL,
and glad OWL found me.

I’m feeling more ready
for puberty’s prowl.
I’m proud to be me,
and I’m proud I’m an OWL.

See you soon,
